⛳ 6 Steps to Create Your Ultimate Indoor Golf League

Winter is coming, and you know what that means—it’s indoor golf season, baby. And this year, we’re thinking about forming our own golf league. If you’re in the same boat, we’re bringing you some of the best tips, tricks, and tools to make it happen.

Step 1: Decide on in person or virtual.

Time to choose where the indoor golf magic happens. Do you have a crew of golfers nearby ready to hit the simulators together, or are your buddies spread across the country? Either way, you’ve got options!

  • In-Person: Hosting a league with local players means managing schedules, logistics, and the overall experience. You’ve got to consider space—if you have just one simulator, keep it manageable! For example, U/skullcrusherRI from r/golfsimulator runs a league of 8 players, rotating 4 at a time for 9 holes. This setup helps avoid late-night rounds (which we don’t mind, but your family might!).

  • Virtual: If you’re playing with friends from coast to coast, starting an online league is a breeze. Whether you’re a GSPro enthusiast or a Trackman pro, check out Carl’s Place for a solid guide on kicking off indoor golf leagues. Plus, you can make the “par-tee” as big or small as you’d like!

Step 2: Create your league schedule.

Now it’s time to lock in the timing! For in-person leagues, will you meet weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly? And for online leagues, don’t forget to set those important “deadlines” for completing rounds.

Based on insights from r/golfsimulator and other forums, a league length of 8-14 weeks tends to be the sweet spot. It keeps things exciting without dragging on too long.

Also, plan out which courses you want to tackle! Mixing it up can keep everyone engaged. For some great scheduling inspiration, check out this thread from ngregg21 on golfsimulatorforum.com. Let’s get those dates on the calendar!

Step 3: Pick your play style.

Now it’s time to get into the fun stuff—picking the format! Will you roll with stroke play, scramble, or maybe Stableford? Here are some tips to guide your choice:

  • Skill Levels: Think about who’s in your league. If you’ve got a mixed bag of players, scrambles or best-ball formats can level the playing field and encourage teamwork. For those competitive spirits, stroke play is a classic choice that adds a bit of intensity.

  • Goals: What’s the vibe you’re aiming for? If you want to foster social interaction and enjoyment, team formats or Stableford are fantastic. For those looking for a serious showdown, consider stroke or match play to keep the competition fierce.

  • Engagement: Keep the excitement alive! Formats that allow players to stay competitive—even after a rough round—can help maintain interest and enthusiasm throughout the league. Think about ways to incorporate fun side competitions or challenges to keep everyone engaged.

Step 4: Establish handicaps.

Let’s make sure everyone can play their best! Establishing handicaps is key for fair competition. We found a fantastic resource from “I Golf and I Make Stuff” on YouTube that walks you through calculating handicap differentials. Just grab the slope and ratings for your course, plug in your scores, and let the sheet do the math after three weeks in the league. This way, everyone gets a fair shot, and it keeps the fun rolling!

Step 5: Keep track of the action.

Managing the league? You’ll want an efficient way to keep score. We recommend using apps like Squabbit—it's intuitive and free! It makes tracking scores and standings a breeze.

Step 6: Set up prizes.

Let’s talk about motivation! Consider a small “fee” to join the league, which can be pooled into a prize pot. You can award prizes for the overall season champ, for individual match victories, or even for special achievements like a hole-in-one. A little friendly competition goes a long way in making things exciting!
