Lessons Learned: What to Do Differently in Your Sim Setup

We took to our forum to uncover the most valuable advice on sim setups—what to prioritize, where to save, and the mistakes to avoid. Here are three key themes that popped up over and over. Consider this your shortcut to a better sim setup!

Spend Smart: The Essentials That Pay Off

u/Fly_on_the_waII is here to save your wrists. “Got a few old [hitting mats] from the local range and my wrists were sore as hell after a day or so of hitting. Went out and immediately bought the Fiberbuilt hitting strip and it's night and day difference.” Moral of the story: Don’t skimp on the hitting mat unless you're into wrist pain.

U/swedoo reminds us that your tech should keep up with your game. “I should have spent more on the gaming laptop. Graphics card is no longer enough.” Don’t let your graphics card hold you back—it’s not 2005 anymore.

U/purkkOnTwitch is dropping truth bombs about golf balls. "Don't just get any balls....get Titleist RCT balls. They aren't cheap, but just do it, you won't regret it” Basically, if you're serious about accurate numbers, don’t go bargain hunting for balls.

Where to Cut Costs Without Cutting Corners

U/hoomayo brings some budget-friendly wisdom. “The impact screen / projector combo is a sweet upgrade but it is not critical off the bat.” Translation: you don’t need a pricey setup right away—start small and upgrade later.

U/opening-painter-9671 agrees that an expensive screen and projector isn’t necessary. “You can even grab a cheap TV, maybe even used to connect the IPad with.”

U/gwwwhhhaaattt shares their budget launch monitor picks. “launch monitor R10 or a used Skytrak.” Good advice if you want more data without draining the bank!

Think Before You Swing: Space Considerations

U/lopro19 wants you to ask the hard questions—can a simulator really be set up in your space? They recommend to “Hit balls there and make sure you are comfortable and can swing freely.” They’re feeling the squeeze in their current setup, so maybe test it out before you commit.

U/TheOther1 has some pro tips for mapping your space. “Use painter's tape to mark the screen distance from the wall, projector distance from the screen, mat distance from the screen, R10 distance from the mat, etc. Once you have that laid out, get your driver, set up where your mat will be, and make a few swings to be sure you easily clear everything.”

U/WallyBarryJay learned the hard way about temporary setups: “When I first made a sim, it was one that I would have to set up and take back down each time I used it. I figured out pretty quickly that I didn't use it nearly as much as I thought since it was a pain to set everything up.” Pro tip: convenience = more playtime.
