Scoring Big: An Interview with GolfLeagueSite

Back in 2014, Mark noticed that his golf league was stuck in the past, struggling with outdated league standings. Fueled by a passion to bring the experience into the digital age, he created a custom platform just for his league. This innovative project quickly transformed into GolfLeagueSite (GLS), and the rest, as they say, is history.

We spoke with Mark to learn more about:

🌟 The Origins of GolfLeagueSite

🚀 Overcoming Initial Challenges

📈 Exciting Future Developments

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Can you share what inspired GolfLeagueSite?

GolfLeagueSite began with a single league in Montgomery County Maryland in 2014.  The inspiration was driven by the fact that our league was trailing far behind the digital age—using a poster board on the clubhouse wall for our league standings. The initial version was specifically designed to only work with our league.  Over the next few seasons it evolved into a more versatile website, and the company was officially formed in 2017 when we began marketing to other nearby leagues.  Today we have about 10,000 users across 38 states and some abroad.

What challenges did you face in getting the idea off the ground?

The biggest challenge with expanding to other leagues was finding an efficient way to allow for all of the different scoring systems.  Most golf leagues, tournaments, golf trips, and even weekend skins games have their own unique way of tracking event standings, season standings, prizes, schedules, etc.  Becoming a truly custom golf software company required us to accommodate all of these differences among leagues.

What are the features you're hoping to implement in the future?

We have a long list of features we're looking to implement over the next several months for next season.  A big one is that we'd like to integrate with some existing golf GPS applications to provide built-in access within GLS to get yardages and read greens.

How do you see GLS growing?

Our growth to date has been very rapid and steady.  I think there are plenty of opportunities to help thousands of golf leagues across the US who are still operating the way we were back in 2014, with poster boards and excel sheets.  We reached our first 10,000 users in fewer than 7 seasons and I foresee the next 10,000 users in about half that time.

Can you share your favorite story from a league using GLS?

I was playing a weekend round with a friend and we were paired up with 2 random players.  We got along pretty well with these guys and toward the end of the round they invited us to join their league, mentioning that they had a few spots open.  They started raving about GLS, saying that the live leaderboards have really transformed their league and how they have doubled their membership since they started.  I thought they were messing with me for a second as I pointed to the "GolfLeagueSite" text on my polo.  They were a bit shocked and both laughed and said they didn't notice it the entire time.  They asked me how long I had worked for GLS and were even more surprised when I told them I founded the company.

Are there any virtual leagues open that readers can check out?

Yes, our VirtualTee leagues are open to anyone in the world, you just need the GSPro software on your sim. Reach out to [email protected] for info on registration.

😎 This is the BEST hitting net we’ve tried.

Rain or Shine Golf kindly sent us their SwingNet Pro Practice Package to assemble and review, and it did not disappoint. Incredibly simple to set up, featuring a cushioned mat and a net that can handle 60-degree lob shots, it earned a solid 5 stars from us. P.S. we have a BIG announcement coming soon… stay tuned!

A cautionary tale about low ceilings in the sim room…
