⛳ From Ice to Fairways: The SportScreen Story

This week, we had the chance to catch up with Russ Lennon and Mark Shaver from The SportScreen, diving into the story behind their innovative start, their bold leap into the golf world, and the exciting new product that's turning heads in the industry.

Can you share the story of how The SportScreen got started? Any “aha” moments in the early stages of developing The SportScreen?

The SportScreen came to life from our shared love of hockey and a strong desire to see more kids playing outside. As parents, we understood the need for a solution that would let kids practice hockey safely at home without worrying about damaging the property. Our "aha" moment hit when we realized that a retractable screen could protect garage doors while still encouraging kids to play safely in their driveways. This led us to create a durable, easy-to-use product that really meets the needs of both parents and young athletes.

What inspired you to expand into the golf market?

Our mutual love for golf made us think about how we could bring the same benefits of our hockey products to golf enthusiasts. We wanted to create something that would allow golfers to practice year-round, no matter the weather, right in the comfort of their homes. Expanding into golf just felt like a natural next step as we saw a great opportunity to help adults stay active, improve their game, and create a multifunctional space in their homes.

As the inventors or the world's first retractable golf enclosure, how did the idea come about? What was the most challenging part of developing this product? 

The idea of a retractable golf enclosure came from the need for a versatile, space-saving solution that could fit into various home settings. With busy family lives, not everyone has the luxury of a dedicated golf space. So, we adapted the technology from our SportScreen products and developed The Vanish Series®, a retractable system that blends seamlessly into any environment. The biggest challenge was making sure the product was durable and functional enough to meet the high standards golfers expect and deserve.

You recently launched a freestanding enclosure, The Parlour Series. What inspired you to expand your product line? During product development, what aspects did you prioritize to meet the needs of golfers?

The decision to expand to The Parlour Series® was driven by customer feedback and the growing demand for versatile, high-quality golf practice solutions. During product development, we really focused on durability, ease of use, and making sure it could fit into various home and commercial settings. We know every space is unique, so we wanted to offer an option beyond the retractable Vanish Series® that could work for everyone.

Can you share some of your favorite success stories or notable experiences from customers using the enclosure?

We’ve had so many customers tell us that not only have they seen improvements in their golf game, but the enclosure has also brought friends and family together as a fun, social activity. We even have some customers who are amateur golf pros using our enclosures, and it’s been exciting to watch them climb the ranks.

What sets The SportScreen apart, and why should golfers choose it for their home builds?

Three things: its innovative retractable design, high-quality materials, and ease of installation. Using our enclosures in a home build gives you a realistic practice experience with optimized projection ratios for a full, clear picture, creating an immersive experience.
